All vertebrates that live on land are certainly descended from fish that developed limbs and occupied land more than 360 million years ago.

Insects, however, have a different story. In insects, the skeletal system sits on the outside. These are so-called arthropods and their body is divided into three parts, just as they always have six legs.

When the vertebrates walked on land, other life forms were already there.

The plants arrived nearly 500 million years ago, followed by the first arthropods such as scorpions and spiders, followed closely by insects more than 400 million years ago.

Scientists believe that insects evolved from crustaceans in the seabed.

To this day you can still find some of the oldest insects there, namely the jumping moth. Some insects later developed wings, which may have evolved from gill-like organs.

The insects quickly spread and evolved into a myriad of different species that took advantage of all habitats in this new world.
