Dark circles under the eyes are often caused by fine, dark veins showing through the thin skin on the lower eyelid. The reason is either that the skin is unusually pale and thin or the layer of fat underneath it is unusually thin.

Insufficient sleep or stress can cause pale skin, but thin and transparent skin is often hereditary.

A thin layer of fat can also be inherited, but can also be caused by low body fat or normal aging.

Both heredity and lifestyle cause dark streaks

Where: The skin on the lower eyelid is in many cases very thin and thus almost transparent.

What: Dark streaks that are either caused by blood vessels under the skin or in some cases a lot of dark pigment.

When: A tendency to develop dark streaks can have many causes, such as heredity, age, allergies, stress, vitamin deficiency or too little sleep.

Another possible cause may be an abnormally high production of dark pigment in the skin.

The pigment is produced by the skin to protect itself from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. If the dark color is a nuisance, plastic surgeons can help, for example with laser treatment.

Last but not least, drugs can affect the formation of dark streaks, for example hormonal drugs, antibiotics or blood thinners. Vitamin deficiencies or metabolic problems are also possible explanations.
